Willard Rouse Jillson, a geologist by trade, and one of Kentucky's foremost historians, describes the first geological map of Kentucky, published by Nelson Sayler in 1865. During the eighty years between the publication of that map and the date of this article, "five new, separately prepared, and distinctly different geological maps of Kentucky have been produced: each one a marked improvement scientifically over its predecessor; each one destined to fill an imperative economic need in the development of the mineral resources of the Commonwealth." They are also described. .
