Zurich, Switzerland : Europa Verlag, 1949 First Edition of 3000 copies. With 12 woodcuts laid in. In paper wrappers, split at spine, in protective mylar sleeve. Listed as Volume 1: Chez Les Hommes/ Unter Den Menschen (Among Men). The woodcuts are collated and titled: crucifixion, air waves, conquerors, parachutes, weapons, shops, profits, lust, nouveau riche, scholar, storm trooper, hope, (as listed in German on the verso of the rear cover). A scarce copy of one of the Masereel's fine graphic works. ***Frans Masereel (1889 – 1972) was a Flemish painter and graphic artist who worked mainly in France. Known mainly for his woodcuts, critics consider his best work to be the wordless novel Mon Livre d'Heures (Passionate Journey). He published over 20 other wordless novels in his career, strongly affecting the graphic work of Lynd Ward and his successors: Clifford Harper and Eric Drooker.
