About This Item
London: Methuen And Company Limited, 1921. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Various. None. None Hard Cover with original publisher’s blue cloth and paper spine label. Both volumes have worm damage on the inside covers near the spine. All pages are bound, binding is tight. Some aging on some page edges. Side and bottom of pages are untrimmed. Overall very clean book. The real star of this book is the artwork presented. “The greater number of illustrations are reproduced by Photogravure process, some by the collotype method, a few representing the artist’s earlier work in Harper’s Magazine are printed from the original engravings upon wood. The remainder of the pictures, including those in the the test from sketch-books or letters, are photographically produced blocks. As both the wood engravings and the photographic blocks are printed typographically, a comparison, interesting to the expert, is possible.” The illustrations are deeply printed with wide tactile borders and should be considered as pieces of art in and of themselves. Despite the rather drab exterior, the contents are quite amazing. Monumental biography of the American muralist, illustrator and painter Edwin Austin Abbey, known for his Shakespearian and Victorian subjects, by the English biographer, playwright, poet, novelist and publisher E.V. Lucas. Extensively illustrated with 200 striking sepia toned engravings with printed tissue guards of Abbey's work and reproductions from daguerreotypes with additional in-text drawings. Abbey was a full member of the Royal Academy, London, and elected to the National Academy of Design, New York, as well the The American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York. This copy stamped: Printed in Great Britain lavishly illustrated volume in very good condition.
