From the Preface: "The object of this book is to aid the teaching of art in the eight grades through the medium of a story. It is an art course which is designed to follow closely the course of art study in use in the schools of South Dakota. Some of the significant features of the book are the profuse illustrations which exemplify the points discussed, the professional presentation of art problems, and the introduction of an immense amount of material required for the units of study that the busy teacher has not the time to prepare nor the books from which the information may be gathered. The book aim is to develop an appreciation of man's efforts to leave the world better and more beautiful than he found it, and an individual desire to aid in this task, if not in producing masterpieces of art, at least in the ability to select more beautiful things and increase the joy of living."
