The author also wrote 'Eighteenth Century Architecture in South Africa', and this work is intended as a companion piece for it. This work documents the influences responsible for the development of furniture in South Africa during the eighteenth century, with information on the popular woods used at the time, as well is information on who originally owned each piece pictured in this volume. Written by G. E. Pearse, who was the first Professor of Architecture at the University of the Witwatersrand , being the first Professor of Architecture anywhere in South Africa. Pearse also wrote 'The Cape of Good Hope 1652-1833'. Illustrated with many monochrome in-text and full page illustrations throughout. With an errata slip loosely inserted. Bookplate to the front pastedown, belonging to William S Ford. In the original publisher's cloth binding with the original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, smart. Boards with some light marking. Minor shelfwear to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Bookplate to the front pastedown. Dustwrapper with some fading to the spine and to the heads and extremities of the wraps. Light marking to the joints and to the wraps of the dustwrapper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with scattered spots to the first and last few pages only. Fine
