This, however, is a short story, published in a thin chapbook in tan wrappers illustrated with a drawing of a unicorn head printed in red-orange ink. One of 400 copies. VG condition quarto hardcover (9.3" x 13.3") in like dustjacket with chips and tears at edges. Lightly tanned pages. Illustrated with many black and white photographs and drawings and some color illustrations, Spanish language, 400 pp. Huge Volume One of bullfighting history. This volume covers only the years 1519-1935. There was supposed to be a Volume Two covering 1935-1969, but I am unsure if it was ever published.

The book is bound in blue cloth with a vignette of Magellan's ship, the Victoria, stamped in gilt at the center of the front cover. The spine is badly sun faded, and there is minor fading across the top inch of the back cover. There is a small bookplate (blank) at the top left corner of the first paste-down page. Text is otherwise clean with no extraneous writing or marks. "The Fifth Letter" is No. 40 in the first series of publications by the Hakluyt Society between 1847 and 1873. It includes not only the letter from Cortes, dated 1526, but the society's 1868 annual report.
