About This Item

New York: Longmans, Green, 1933. Second Edition, Second Printing . Printed Black Boards. Very Good/No Jacket. 9 7/16" Tall. The second edition chiefly differs from the first, the author states in his preface, by clearer presentation of the physical conceptions; enlargement of the discusssion of the electro-static circuit to equal emphasis with electric and electro-magnetic circuits; a rewrite of the theory of series and parallel resonance; a clearer distinction between armature reactions and armature self-inductance; and a review of the theory of the transformer. This is not to say throw out your old copy of Beaver, just that time and the electrical industry have moved briskly forward since the first edition was published in 1926, and that the author has kept right in step with the innovations. The chapter headings are: Vectors; Alternating Current Conceptions; Average and Effective Values, Power; Rate of Change Resistance, Inductance, Capacitance; Series Circuits, Resistance, Reactance, Impedance; Parallel Circuits, Conductance, Susceptance, Admittance; The Complex Quantity or the Symbolic Notation; Single-phase and Polyphase Relations; Transformers; Synchronous Machines; Polyphase Induction Motors; Single-phase Motors; and Methods of Converting Alternating Current into Direct Current. Thirteen chapters, 393 pages, with half-tones, numerous figures, schematics, two Appendixes, and Index; plus two Prefaces and Contents; Questions and Problems at the end of each chapter. Covers show fading, rubbing, and fraying at backstrap; name of prior owner inked on rfEP, and stamp of first owner on rfEP, Contents page, and page 100; text is strong and clean except for an ink underline on page 60 and enthusiastic pencillings on page 172.
