London: Richard Bentley, 1844. Presentation Inscription front end page -"Sally Reahard from Ruth Lilly - 1938". A wonderful book collecting Association Copy. "An elderly Indianapolis recluse, a fortune in Eli Lilly & Co. stock and a penchant for phenomenal donations to non-profits -- it could describe Ruth Lilly, the $100 million benefactor of the Chicago-based Poetry Foundation. Or perhaps a kindred spirit named Sally Reahard." (Chicago Tribune, Feb. 16, 2004). Sally Reahard bequeathed $70 million to the Nature Conservancy in 2003, the largest gift the Conservancy had ever received. Sally was a noted book collector as well, and Ruth was the daughter of J.K. Lilly, Jr. whose fabulous book collection was the foundational collection for Lilly Library at Indiana University. The Tribune article continues -" Both were longtime investors in Eli Lilly who just saw their holdings go up and up." One can almost imagine that the title of this particular book was an inside joke between these ladies. The book is Near Fine, light rubbing at edges. Finely bound in half polished black calf, floral gilt decorated back with red morocco label, marbled end papers, top edge gilt. v, 177 + (3) adverts. With 48 humorous wood-cut text illustrations. . First Edition. Half Polished Calf. Near Fine/No Jacket, As Issued. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Association Copy.

New York: Midwood Publications, Inc., 1978. Second Edition . Mass Market Paperback. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. A VERY GOOD MINUS copy of Midwood 61112. Marty goes wild when his young niece moves in - and she moves in big-time, scheming to kill Marty's wife and run off with him and his money, eventually planning to subtract Marty himself from the equation! 208 pages (9 pages shorter than the First Edition). CONDITION: a solid, uncreased copy, unmarked but for a "remainder" line on the page-block top, with heavily rubbed covers - most likely from being prematurely stacked at the end of the manufacturing process. (Since there is no surface loss on the covers, I don't think it's from storage in a humid environment.) This nevertheless quite respectable copy is now in a clear, protective polypropylene bag. NOTE: A higher resolution cover scan will gladly be supplied on request. This small item will be shipped, securely packed, with a complimentary… Read More

Description:
New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons / The Knickerbocker Press, 1927. Half-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Corners a bit rubbed, boards faintly soiled, ink date and owner bookplate of Robert N. Cherry on front flyleaf. 1927 Half-Leather. iv, 325 pp. 8vo. No binder's ticket, but appears to be a contemporary custom rebinding: blue leather spine and corners over blue cloth, gilt titles and rules, top edge gilt, new end sheets. "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.
