Rare and Antiquarian Books

Fine Bindings

Part of what makes antiquarian books so collectible are their fine and delicate bindings, and the tradition of book binding has come a long way since the clay tablets and palm fronds of the ancient world. After binders moved from clay and palm leaves, they began binding sheets of vellum, or calf skin. The sheets were bound with wooden boards and then connected with strips of leather. As the art of bookbinding became much more accepted, certain binders began to attach precious gemstones and metals in the bindings themselves. Although many of these books were destroyed because looters wanted to steal the gems, there are still a few books that remain with these rare and unique bindings. Of course, there are other types of fine bindings as well. Long-stitch bookbinding can still be found today in many types of journals. Long-stitch bindings feature the sewing together of sections of a book. It originated in Germany in the medieval era and has been used ever since. Similarly, Ethiopian bookbinding features a chain-stitch sewing method that uses two needles. Interestingly, though the covers were the typical wooden boards, they were left uncovered and often unadorned. Books with fine bindings are themselves works of art, and they bring added value and color to any collection. Whether book collectors choose to focus on one type of binding or whether they wish to embrace the wide diversity of bindings, any of these books would greatly enhance their collection.

Description:
1611 King James Geneva Hybrid Bible | 1st ed John SPEED New Testament Genealogy

This Geneva KJV Hybrid Bible from 1611 to 1618 was printed in London by Robert Barker and associates during a transitional period in English Bible production. In the 16th and 17th centuries, English Bibles printed by Barker were extremely popular and have maintained their value and desirability into the 21st century. However, none are as historically sought-after as the famous 1611 King James Bible. This edition integrates the complete King James Old Testament and Apocrypha with a Geneva-style annotated New Testament. The New Testament title page is present and dated 1611. According to Darlow & Moule, New Testament title pages dated "1611" appeared only in 1611 and 1612 issues; they also state that for editions appearing in 1613, a large portion of the content was probably printed in 1611. Ruth 3:15 reads "she went into the citie," identifying this copy with the second state of the 1611 King James Bible. Geneva woodcut… Read more

Description:
London: Printed for Awnsham and John Churchill, at the Black-Swan in Pater-noster Row, 1694. Rare second edition of Locke’s famed treatises on government. Duodecimo, elaborately bound in full contemporary calf with ruling and tooling stamped in blind to the front and rear panels, all edges speckled. In good condition with rubbing, losses to the corners, and the spine rebacked. Lacking pages 337-352, which are supplied in facsimile and loosely inserted in a pocket adhered to the rear pastedown. Locke's Two Treatises of Government were first published anonymously in December 1689. Locke was unhappy with this edition, complaining to the publisher about its many errors. For the rest of his life, he was intent on republishing the Two Treatises in a form that better reflected his meaning. The First Treatise of the volume attacks patriarchalism in the form of sentence-by-sentence refutation of Robert Filmer's Patriarcha, while the Second Treatise outlines Locke's ideas for a more civilized… Read more

London: Printed For J. Johnson, 1792. First edition of this landmark work—among the earliest and most influential feminist manifestos—presenting a groundbreaking critique of the social and educational structures that enforced women’s subordination. Exceptionally rare in the original boards. “Wollstonecraft’s major work caused an outcry when it was published and is hailed as a cornerstone of feminism…. The central theme of the work on women’s rights was that they should be educated to carry a responsibility in society equal to that of men. In disagreement with Rousseau… Wollstonecraft urged ‘rational fellowship instead of slavish obedience” (Legacies of Genius 64).
