About This Item

Leipsig and Dresden: A.H. Payne, 1870. First edition. Hardcover. Three quarter brown calf and marbled boards. Very good. 236 pages. 28 x 23 cm. Seventy three plates, most are hand-tinted. Glossarial Index. Also, contains a chapter on Staircases and handrails. A.H. Payne was an English engraver and illustrator who from 1838, lived in Leipzig. Perhaps hand-coloring was cheaper in Leipzig, as there is no apparent reason for its printing and production there. A complete and comprehensive mid-nineteenth century survey Scattered, intermittent text toning, plates generally clean, dampstain lower inside margin through page 55 barely touching text portions. Binding very firm and tight. Raised bands, red leather spine label.
