Philadelphia: John C. Winston Company, 1955. First Edition. HB. Quarter red cloth over black cloth boards, gilt lettering on front cover and spine, 8vo, 248 pp. Top edge of text block stained red. Author's memoir of his experiences during World War II as a soldier in the 115th Panzer Grenadiers first on the eastern front, and later transferred to Italy, where he was captured by Americans. Sent to a prisoner-of-war camp in Illinois, he escaped near the end of the war, ran a bookshop in Chicago until discovered by the FBI in 1953, and returned to Germany. Pabel later opened a successful book selling business in Hamburg that is still operational today. SIGNED by the author top of FFEP. Owner's name, inked out, on FFEP, owner's label bottom of ffep, no other marks in book, binding tight. Covers clean, edges of text block show very light soiling. In an unclipped ($3.50) dust jacket that shows light chipping and edge wear. Book condition VG in VG- DJ.
