About This Item
London: Frederick Etchells & Hugh Macdonald/The Shakespeare Head Press, 1925. Limited edition. Hardback. Very good/Good. Frederick Etchells and Hugh Macdonald, The Shakespeare Head Press, London, 1925. Limited edition of 900 of which this is no 779. Book condition: very good. Very slight bumping to corners. Some small & light marks to front. Some extremely slight wrinkling of brown paper covers to front board which look like production faults rather than any kind of damage. Cloth binding to spine very clean with gilt titles - some slight adhesive marks - again most likely production faults. Previous owner's printed bookplate to front paste down. Internally the book is very clean and sound with some tanning to endpapers. Very occasional spotting here and there. Dust jacket condition: good. A little loss to tail of spine and at lower points of folds. Some shelf wear around the edges. Spine discoloured and some light soiling/occasional marks. Of all the collections of lyrical poetry published between 'Tottels Miscellany' in 1557 and 'the Golden Treasury' in 1861, 'Englands Helicon' is by far the most important. The general level of the poetry brought together in the volume is higher than that in any of the other early anthologies, and it contains a much larger number of poems which have kept their place among the treasures of English literature.
