Description:
London: Faber & Faber, 2014. First edition, 2014. Hardback. 218pp. Dust jacket. When Chaucer composed Troilus & Crisyde he gave us what is aid to be his finest poem and one of the most captivating love stories ever written. It is also a tale that has passed from one writer to another over centuries, evolving and enduring as a tragedy of human nature that speaks to us all. Lavinia Greenlaw's retelling is neither a translation nor a version but something new. She has drawn out the story's psychological drama through a process of detonation or amplification of image and phrase into original poems. In this series of skilfully crafted seven-line vignettes, she creates a zoetrope that illuminates each small but irrevocable step as these characters argue each other and themselves into and out of love. The result is a breathtaking read, contemporary and timeless, that builds into an unforgettable telling of this heartbreaking love story. Book in near fine condition and unread. London: The Pelican Press, 1917. First edition. Softcover. Very Good/No dust jacket.. The Pelican Press, London, 1917. First edition. Stapled pamphlet with brown paper wraps & yapp edges. Condition: very good. Wrap a little creased and nicked around the yapp edges and some very light soiling. Internally very clean and virtually free of spotting. Langdon-Davies wrote this work as an undergraduate at St John's College, Oxford. He was called up in 1917 and declared himself to be a conscientious objector. This led to a short prison sentence before he was declared unfit for military service. He had intended to continue his academic career but, due to his military service record, he found that one of his scholarships had been withdrawn. Economic conditions then forced him to abandon his university studies. This delightful little pamphlet contains some lovely work by Langdon-Davies - especially the opening piece: 'Snowdrops, Oxford'.
