About This Item

Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1975. Two hardback volumes with dust jackets and slipcase. Volume 1: Catalogue:[i - vi], vii - xxviii, 1 - 923; Volume 2: Indexes: 1 - 302. Publisher's original brown cloth binding with gilt to spine. Top edges tinted red. A comprehensive catalogue of the separately printed English poems of the first half of the eighteenth century. Volume 1 contains some ten thousand entries, giving full bibliographical details and information on first lines, subject and the location of copies. Many of the works listed are very rare and exist only in little-known collections. The author personally examined as many copies of each work as possible in British and American libraries and has been able to provide a great deal of important new bibliographical information. Many hitherto unknown works have been discovered and new issues or editions, even of such well researched authors as Swift and Pope, are identified. Volume 2 comprises a full series of indexes. As well as the index of subjects and first lines there is a chronological index listing the poems in their order of publication, indexes of bibliographical notabilia and descriptive epithets, and an index of printers and booksellers, bibliographers and historians of printing, publishing and bookselling. Both volumes in very good condition and are very clean and unmarked internally. Volume 1 has some light marking to half title page where (probably) an Ex Libris plate had been stuck but later lost, leaving some slight adhesive residue behind. There is also a small bruise to bottem edge of lower board. Volume 2 has a small printed sticker to the ffep with previous owner's name. Very occasional signs of slight bleed from the top edge tint into the page top margins. Jackets in good condition. A little rubbed and soiled - especially to spines. Occasional chipping and light edge wear and volume 1 has a split at the rear fold. Slipcase a little rubbed and scuffed but sound and serviceable. The overall ensemble has a very mild musty odour but no signs of mould or spotting. The two volumes are rather heavy but no additional shipping charges to UK post codes. Overseas buyers please ask for a shipping quote.
