About This Item
Paris: A. and W. Galignani, 1837. Cloth. Good. 8.5" by 5.5". Not Stated. An early edition of this novel by noted nineteenth-century writer, Edward Bulwer-Lytton. Published in Paris the same year as the first edition. A very early edition of this work, published in 1837, the same year as the first edition. Ernest Maltravers is a novel of Victorian sensation, and begins with a lonely traveller, the namesake of this story, stopping for rest at a peasant's cottage. The peasant plans to kill Ernest in his sleep in order to steal his expensive-looking watch, but the events of this night take some unexpected turns. Written by noted 19th-century English author Edward Bulwer-Lytton, known for coining such phrases as "the great unwashed", "pursuit of the almighty dollar", and "the pen is mightier than the sword". This copy contains a plate to the front pastedown labelled 'Schloss Ellieschau', possibly a reference to the Ellischau Castle, now Nalzovy Castle in modern day southwest Czechia. Also containing some ink and pencil inscriptions from previous owners to the front free-endpaper. In quarter cloth binding with marbled boards. Externally, some shelf wear to the boards and spine and some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Previous owner's ink notations to the front free-endpaper. Internally, hinges tender but firm. Scattered spotting to the pages. Good
