About This Item

CESAR FIOSCONI, E JORDAM GUSERIO. LISBOA OCCIDENTAL, Na Officina de ANTONIO PEDROZO GALRAM. Anno de 1718.

In 8.º de 19,8x14 cm.

A pag. A pag. A pag. A pag. A pag. A pag. A pag. A pag. 121, estampa representando os fechos. A pag. 131, estampa que representa outra maneira de fechos. A pag. A pag.

[EN] Contemporary limp sheepskin parchment binding, gilt title on spine, red edges.

Illustrated with magnificent allegorical frontispiece engraved with the coat-of-arms of king of Portugal D. John V; and 12 engravings (2 are folding) signed by M. Freyre.

Very rare book, especially when complete with all the plates. With 1 plate detached, a few minor tears, and an occasional stain (mostly in the gutter margin), otherwise in very good condition. A rare and well-illustrated practical manual of gunsmithing.

First (and only early) edition of a rare Portuguese manual devoted primarily to gun smithing, but also discussing the use of guns in hunting. It gives detailed instructions and excellent illustrations concerning the techniques of gunsmithing ca. 1700, with views of men at work at the forge, with many tools in view, a man using a lathe, men using several other tools, decorated gunlocks and other decorative elements. One plate shows a man shooting a bird. Written by two brothers, the Lisbon gunsmiths José Fransisco and João Rodrigues, it is "the most remarkable treatise on the subject of gunmaking of this period'' (Daehnhardt in the introduction of the 1974 reprint). The Rodrigues brothers broke with tradition by setting down in print knowledge that had previously been passed down from master to apprentice within the closed circles of the trade guilds.

Inocêncio 4, 28. 'João Rodrigues (2. º), rifle maker, very skilled on this industry composed himself the book. He was born in Lisbon.

This book, which apparently was written by him and his brother, José Francisco, was published with the names of Cesar Fiosconi e Jordam Guserio, which are anagrams of their real names. They are also on the title page vignette recorded in miniature riflemen stamps.

As usual copies missing some prints often appear, and these have no indication of the number or any other circumstance that might indicate that they are missing, I think it would be convenient to give here a brief description of the prints themselves and their placement, so that those whose hands they come into can check that they are all there in their due places.

Before the dedication is an engraved frontispiece with the royal coat of arms of Portugal in the centre. On page 8 there is a larger print depicting the workshop of a gunsmith, with his instruments and tools. Page 48 is a print in the format of the book, depicting two artists beating a piece on an anvil. Page 76 is a print in the format of the book, showing the gunsmith looking down the barrel of his rifle in the manner of a telescope. On page 80, a print in the same format. It shows the gunsmith perfecting the barrel of a rifle in his vice. On page 84, a print showing the dimensions of the barrel. On page 91, a print depicting the gunsmith filing the barrel, using a rule and compass. Page 95, print showing how to file round barrels. On page 121, a print showing the clasps. Page 131, print showing another way of fastening. Page 137, a print depicting riflemen polishing their guns Page 147, a larger format than the book, containing various rifle parts. Page 160, a print showing the artist experimenting the rifle."

About Livraria Castro e SIlva

Founded in 1957, by Ezequiel Castro e Silva, LIVRARIA CASTRO E SILVA is a bibliographic commercial organization, well known in the antique book market and amongst the antiquarian booksellers, both in Portugal and abroad, for being one of the most distinguished Portuguese specialists in its area, dealing in books through several continents. We seek to maintain a family tradition that goes back to the second decade of the last century. Our main activity is the edition and periodic publication of bibliographic catalogues.

Aiming to provide faster access to our catalogues, better stock information and improving communication with our clients, in 2003 we launched our website www.castroesilva.com, allowing all interested parts an easier access to registration and order of our catalogues. This webpage has a bibliographical database which seeks to replace the old file system, in itself an historical and probably unique tool, while allowing us the means to spread information about our books and contributing to the general bibliographical research.

We are convinced that personal contact should always be privileged so all interested parts can visit us at our shop, where those seeking rare, antique books, for collecting or studying can find and examine them in the private quiet environment such activity requires.
