Green cloth spine with gilt lettering and green/gold decorative paper over boards, green cloth-covered clamshell case with gilt spine lettering. ix, 190pp (mostly uncut). Top edge gilt. Fine/very good. Mild wear and age toning to clamshell case. Tight and handsome copy of these renowned early 17th century essays by the philosophizing statesman, 1st Viscount St. Alban and Lord Verulam (1561-1626) -- fifth title in their 15th series. Printed at the noted press of William E. Rudge's Sons, the colophon at rear notes their lower World War Two limitation of 1100 numbered copies (this #1073) signed by legendary book designer Bruce Rogers. NEWMAN 157.
