Boston, Massachusetts: [S.N.], "Reprinted on the Occasion of the XIIIth International Physiological Congress, 1929," this copy inscribed, signed & dated in ink by neurosurgeon Harvey Cushing at the ffep. 8vo (9" x 5.75"), xl & 280 pages, with frontis portraits, charts, & tables. Original light brown paper over boards backed in dark brown cloth with a printed title label on the spine, in printed dust jacket. Laid-in is the programme for the New York Academy of Medicine's "Stated Meeting, October 5, 1933" [in] "Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the Publication of William Beaumont's "Experiments and Observations." (Bifolium, 8vo, 4 pp., on thick card stock, with photograph of the Chester Harding portrait of Beaumont tipped to the upper cover, with ink presentation & illegible signature).

Trace of shelf wear, otherwise near fine in good only dust jacket, rubbed & browned mostly at the spine, soiled, with tears, losses & archival tissue repairs on the verso. Programme with edge wear & browning, good or better.

"Alexis St. Martin, a Canadian half-breed who had sustained a gastric fistula, was treated and investigated by Beaumont. With his human medium, Beaumont as the first to study digestion and the movements of the stomach in vivo. His work on the subject was the most important before Pavlov. Edinburgh imprint, 1838. Second edition, corrected, Burlington, Vt., 1847. Facsimile reprint, Cambridge, Harvard Univ. Press, 1929." ~Garrison & Morton 989.
