About This Item

Milwaukee, WI: Smith Engineering Works, [ca. 1920]. Oblong 8vo. 7.25 x 4.0 in. Title and ownership leaf bound in rear, w/ loaner inscription in ink, 15 original product linen-backed photographs (5.5 x 3.5 in.), each with identifying information at lower fore-edge, product numbers at right corner, mounted on linen hinges. Black cloth post-binder, nickel screws at spine, gilt stamping for Grogan Photo Co. on rear pastedown, gilt stamping of Smith Engineering Works on front cover (minor shelfwear, chipping to right margin of ownership leaf, minor rubbing to front cover lettering), still a VG- copy, w/ photo images in excellent condition. First edition of this very scarce factory salesman sample catalogue of the machinery sold by T.L. Smith under the Smith Engineering Works which produced the rock crushing equipment, sand tanks, aggregate screens, elevators, wash plants, and screening plants for gravel mining, road building, and hard rock mining. The original product photographs of the machinery provide invaluable visual aid information of the equipment for sale, including Telsmith Jaw Crusher, Telsmith Hercules Rotary Screen, Single- and Double-deck Vibrators, Single Rewasher, Double Rewasher, Plate Feeder, Sand Drag, and others. The company was founded in 1910 by Thomas L. Smith who invented, patented, and produced the first tilting concrete mixer in 1900. Charles Smith was placed in charge of the company’s crusher operations in 1914, and in 1915 he changed the name for that division to Smith Engineering works, set up his own distribution network, and began using the Telsmith Trade name coined from his father’s name. The company continued operating in Milwaukee, Wisconsin until the 1980s, when it shifted to Springville, NY. Parts of the company were purchased by Trinity Industries in Texas, who merged the company and its line of mixers into their Temco transit mixer and batch plant line.
