Illustrated with 2 half tone frontispieces, 98 full page mono plates plus 138 smaller vignettes and grotesque heads throughout the text. Neat previous owners bookplate on the front blank endpapers and neat presentation inscription on blank leaf opposite. A fine set in highly attractive mid twentieth century leather bindings by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Finely bound in half dark blue morocco. Spines with raised bands, decorated with gilt piping. Compartments ruled, decorated and lettered in gilt. Blue cloth on boards. Top edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. A fine set of this wonderfully illustrated edition. The books are undated but Geofrey Beare's bibliography of W. Heath Robinson dates this edition to 1913 and is a smaller version of the magnificent large format 1904 Grant Richards edition. (Beare #35c).

Two-color map endpapers of Middle-earth at front and rear of first two volumes, more detailed two-color map of Gondor, Mordor, and Rohan on endpapers of volume three; 48 full-color plates (16 in each volume). Volume one also has a full-page b&w map of the Shire. Volume one has very faint damp stain at upper right corner of front cover, else fine copies in original color pictorial dust jacket (3/4" closed tear at top of front panel on volume one, all copies showing lightest edgewear). All three volumes housed in original black, internally padded, slipcase with design celebrating Tolkien's centenary in 1992 embossed in silver foil on front and back and satin pull attached (so as not to damage books when removing them from the slipcase)h . No place. No date. Circa 1870. ILLUSTRATED MANUSCRIPT. Oblong 8vo. (9.4 x 5.5 inches). Longfellow's popular eearly poem, An April day, written in a neat hand on 12 thick paper leaves. Ten of the leaves are beautifully illustrated in watercolour by an unknown but very skilled artist. Bound in attractive nineteenth century full red morocco. Spine with multiple gilt ruled lines and three raised bands. Both boards have a highly decorative gilt roll and ruled lines border around a double ruled and corner decorated blind tooled panel. The front board has the title and author lettered in gilt. Gilt inner dentelles and yellow coated endpapers. All edges gilt. A little rubbing to the extremities but overall a beautiful volume in very good condition.

Offices of the Studio. London. 1895. Volume Five. 4to. Fully illustrated throughout. Bound in early full green morocco with bevelled edged boards. Spine with raised bands, each with gilt piping. Compartments double ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. White vellum inlay on the front cover incorporated into a gilt reproduction of the well known original design used on the cloth bound copies of this volume, within a double ruled border edge. Rear board with gilt double ruled line border. Gilt inner dentelles. Silk endpapers. All edges gilt. The binding is unsigned but is certainly the work of a master bookbinder. It is possible that this volume was bound for the publisher's salesmen of the Studio as a promotional tool.

William Heinemann Ltd. London. 1961. THREE VOLUMES. Reprint of the 1951 Edition. 8vo. (8.1 x 5.7 inches). Fine and clean set in attractive leather bindings by Bayntun of Bath. Contemporary full blue polished calf. Spines with five raised bands, each with gilt decorative roll. The compartments are ruled, lettered and fully decorated in gilt. Red and green labels, gilt. Double gilt ruled border on boards. Board edges with decorative floral gilt roll. Inner gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Housed in a blue paper coveredslip case which has some minor wear but has done its job of keeping the books protected. The slip case is felt lined and has a beige silk tie pull. The spines are just a touch faded and there are a couple of small scratches but overall this is an attractive and finely bound set of this important collection.

Twin red labels, gilt. Single gilt decorative roll border on boards. Top edge gilt. A few light finger marks but overall a very good, bright copy.

Hodder and Stoughton Ltd. London. No Date. circa 1922. EARLY EDITION, with extra colour plate. 8vo. (7.5 x 6 inches). Complete, and with one more illustration than the original 1911 edition. Full colour illustrated frontispiece mounted onto grey art paper and with a tissue guard, decorative mono title page and twelve full page mono plates by Bedford. Internally this is a very good, bright and clean copy, in an attractive early half leather binding by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, of London, for E. P. Dutton & Company, New York. Half dark green calf. Spine with raised bands, each with gilt piping. Compartments fully decorated and ruled in gilt. Twin burgundy labels, ruled, decorated and lettered in gilt. Marbled paper on boards. Top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Off white silk bookmark. Rubbing to the outer layer of the leather on the binding edges, particularly the hinge on the lower board, but both hinges still firm and strong and still an attractive binding.
