First Edition, second impression. Presentation copy, signed by Hardy on the title page, "Yours truly Thomas Hardy," with blind stamped "Presentation Copy" on title page. Although not stated, the book comes from the library of the translator Cecil Georges Bazile.
Frontispiece, with tissue guard. 8vo. Original green boards, gilt design on cover; gilt letters on spine; enclosed in original white printed dust wrapper. Macmillan and Company Limited, London 1923.
Some water damage to binding; dust wrapper soiled and chipped, with 2½-inch chip to front edge; o/w very nice.
