Beautifully bound in contemporary unsigned full dark green pebbled morocco, the covers with intricate and flowing floral gilt decorations bordered by double gilt rules, the backs gilt, marbled end papers, all edges gilt, silk marker. Very Good, moderate browning throughout, bottom panel at spine a bit faded, a few small rubs at edges. Tall 8vo, 10 1/2" x 6 3/4". In the foretitle: "Balzac illustre". 402 pages, illustrations. 100 vignettes in text plus one on title engraved on steel by Brunellière, Nargeot, Langlois from drawings by Gavarni, Baron, Janet-Lange, François Marckl. Without the additional two full page portraits of Pauline and Foedora. 20th c. prior owner bookplate front paste down. The book that firmly established Balzac as a writer of significance in France. . First Illustrated Edition. Pebbled Morocco. Very Good/No Jacket, As Issued. Tall 8vo.
