Contains black and white illustrated plates. Pages and plates are lightly tanned and foxed throughout. Cracking to gutters of a few pages with exposed binding. Light thumb-marking present. Previous owner's inscription to front free endpaper. Binding is slightly shaky. Boards have mild edge wear with slight rubbing to surfaces. Crushing to spine ends with small splits and fraying to cloth. Heavy tanning to spine and edges.

Bound in the original blue pictorial cloth, lettered in gold on the spine and front cover. Top edge gilt. The front cover features the silhouette of a black cat over a white and gold shield, with a motto in Latin. All cover gilt is still reasonably bright and shiny. First printing, with 1901 on the title page, and "Published October, 1901" so stated on the copyright page. This is a delightful compilation of cat lore.
