Genealogical tables, extensive chapter notes, bibliography, index. Black cloth. Previous owner's name and date printed on front inside flap of dust jacket, else a very fine copy with dust jacket. Relates the family history through ten generations, from 1652 when its American progenitor arrived in northern Virginia from England, to 1867 when the heirs of the sixth George Mason sold the family seat, Gunston Hall. The authors describe the family's service in the county militia, in the courts, in the House of Burgesses, and the Masons' role as land speculators in western expansion. Much on the planter-baron aristocracy of Virginia and the gradual dissolution of the plantation economy which began after the War of 1812..

The Argonaut was a founding member of the Antiquarian Booksellers\' Association of America and has been a member in good standing ever since. The Shop is now located just three blocks from Union Square in downtown San Francisco and is open six days a week. Parking facilities include ample street space and a parking garage close by.
