Description:
Harlequin Ladybird Reading Scheme/Dung Beetle Ltd, 2015. 3 vols. 8vo. Publisher's decorated boards in highly accurate pastiche of the British "Ladybird Books" series, a ubiquitous part of the reading experience of every British child born between the 1940's and the 1980's with their occasionally not so gentle introduction to some fairly adult themes, and some strange historical choices. The Ladybird Book of The Aztecs was a particular favourite, nothing like an introduction to casual human sacrifice and colonial massacres to brighten up primary school reading hour. Miriam Elia has taken this instantly recognisable format and subverted it relentlessly to artistic and comic effect. The first volume caused no little controversy upon appearance, and Ladybird Books took a very dim view of the themes and obvious parody, legal action was taken and the self published imprint needed a swift name change to "Dung Beetle Ltd." The first printing under the Harlequin Ladybird name therefore became extremely… Read More

Dent, 1893. 4to., 8 1/2" x 10", lxiv + 455 pages, illustrated with full page plates, vignettes, borders, in-text decorations and cover design by Aubrey Beardsley. Beardsley's first major commission and a landmark of great illustrated books. Beardsley juxtaposed various traditional and contemporary styles with his own, and laid them down, side-by-side throughout the book. From elaborate and formal William Morris design elements to shocking eroticism and striking decadence - as in the case of the frontispiece plate of Arthur. Cream linen cloth with elaborate gilt design and fancy titles. Top edge gilting, 3-color ribbon marker bound in. This book is in very good condition. There is minor wear on the dust cover and little to no wear at all on the front, back, spine and edges of the cover boards. The pages are white, crisp and free of any markings. "Perhaps because it seems so close in time to our own experience, many art lovers feel a special kinship with the turn of the century. We speak of fin-de siecle artists almost as if we know them, and a large body of scholarly work exists covering nearly every conceivable aspect of the late nineteenth-century philosophy, sociology, and art. Given that, it is a rare and remarkable opportunity when one finds something new and unknown about the late 1800's, a privilege we at the Smithsonian Institute Traveling Exhibition Service are pleased to share with everyone who reads this book and visits the exhibition Art Nouveau Bing...." - Foreword from Art Nouveau Bing: Paris Style 1900

New Haven and New York: Yale University Press and the Jewish Museum, 2004. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover in Dust Jacket. Fine/Fine. Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920) is one of the greatest - and most misunderstood - artists of the twentieth century. His incisive portraits, erotically charged nudes, beautiful drawings, and primitivistic sculpture have been admired for decades. Modigliani's work, however, has typically been examined in the limited context of his so-called bohemian, anti-intellectual lifestyle. This groundbreaking book revises this approach toward Modigliani's art, presenting a convincing revisionist examination of the unique historical, social, religious, and cultural significance of his oeuvre.  No Flaws or Blemishes but minimal shelf handling; Still Gift Quality.
