About This Item

color lithograph on single, originally folded thin paper sheet published as an insert to the Osaka Mainichi Shimbun newspaper

dimensions: 30" x 41 3/4"

Description:
This Japanese world map of 1930 is also a game board for players to compete as pilots making a flight around the world, stopping at 52 marked destinations along their way. These 52 destinations are illustrated with numbered ovals 1. - 52 in Arabic numerals that surround the world map. The ovals are pictorial vignettes of architectural wonders, famous actors, wild animals such as kangaroos and zebra and natural history. There are ovals illustrated with images of people from all over the world. Major geological and geographic features are also shown in these vignettes, such as Mt. Fuji. Japan is at the center of the map. The imagery is printed in a kind of photograph printing technique.

The map itself may appear distorted to readers accustomed to maps drawn on Mercator's Projection. This map is drawn on Mollweide's projection and shows land mass rather than precise shapes of continents. Countries are outlined and drawn in contrasting colors. National flags identify countries and their respective colonies on other continents. Flight routes are represented with solid and hatch marked red lines. Airplanes, a Zeppelin and other aircraft symbolism cover the map.
The text of the map is in Japanese. The text is graphically integrated into the gameboard, composed in vertical columns in each of the four corners of the large sheet and functions as a kind of outer frame to the oval frame of the world map itself.
