Three nearly square quarto volumes (11" x 10-1/2") bound with eelskin spines and Italian cloth covers. Illustrated from etchings by the author and Nobel Prize winner Gunter Grass. Five years in the making, this massive effort is a tribute from some of America's finest book craftspeople to one of Germany's most creative and recognized artists. Translated by Ralph Manheim. Copy #323 of 1000 numbered copies SIGNED by the author on the colophon page. Monthly Letter laid in.

Synopsis

It all begins in the Stone Age, when a talking fish is caught by a fisherman at the very spot where millennia later Grass's home town, Danzig, will arise. Like the fish, the fisherman is immortal, and down through the ages they move together. As Grass blends his ingredients into a powerful brew, he shows himself at the peak of his linguistic inventiveness. Translated by Ralph Manheim. A Helen and Kurt Wolff Book
