About This Item
London: Secker & Warburg, 1965. First UK edition. Hardcover. A very good copy with a binding flaw to the bottom (at spine) of pages 109-114 in a very good plus dust jacket. Richard Chopping. The first novel written by this British illustrator best known for painting the dust jackets of Ian Fleming's James Bond novels starting with 'From Russia With Love'. The Fly was recommended to its publisher by Angus Wilson, where David Farrar found it "a perfectly disgusting concoction". Edited by Giles Gordon who said the book was "Sufficciently sordid to appeal to voyeurs, and if Chopping were to adorn it with one of his famous dust jackets it could be a 'succes de scandale; and so it proved." The dust jacket depicts a huge fly peering into an human eyeball (and I wager they do not see 'eye to eye'!) Chopping, during the 1940s established himself as an author and illustrator of natural history and children's books. Bound in bright blue cloth with silver spine lettering.
