This is a first edition printing - the author's desk copy (noted by the author on the first flyleaf and top of title page. The author has made notations throughout the book - in pencil. This volume is one of three which grew out of a study of Black culture on St. Helena Island, South Carolina. This book deals with certain major aspects of dialect, folk songs, and folklore. The section on dialect attempts to describe the Gullah dialect traits. Condition problems: Book is cocked. Cover corner tips are slightly bumped. Shelf wear on top and bottom of spine. Binding beginning to separate but remains tight.
