About This Item
Printed in Los Angeles by Times-Mirror Printing and Binding House, for Yosemite Park and Curry Company, 1936, (30,5 x 21,5 cm), pp. (50) 2 (blank); stapled in orig. brown, limp wrappers. First edition. Colour frontispiece, 56 photographs reproduced and one inserted double-page map printed in blue and brown. - This souvenir book was prepared by Stanley Plumb, the company's publicity director. Ansel Adams, under contract to take pictures for the company, but unaware of this publication until it was in print, was somewhat dissatisfied with the reproduction of his prints. Quite understandable from a photographer's view-point, especially one like Adams, who himself wrote, "Perhaps the most important characteristic of my work is what may be called print quality." Let us also keep in mind that this is a mid 1930s book and that at that time the reproduction in books or magazines of paintings, photographs, etc., was generally inferior to the high quality we have today. - Four editions were issued, the last in 1940. Includes many rarely seen Adams photographs. This is a very fine copy, in quasi mint condition.
