About This Item

New York: D. Van Nostrand, 1873. Wraps. Good + overall. With a striking early image of West Point, Constitution Island and the chain across the Hudson River entitled, "West Point Viewed from the North as it appeared at the Close of the War", by H. Livingston, engraved by C. Tiebout.

Fourth reunion publication of the USMA Association which still exists today, established in 1869 to "cherish the memories of our Alma Mater, and to promote the social intercourse and fraternal fellowship of its graduates". This scarce post Civil War issue honors the recently deceased General Sylvanus Thayer, the late President of the Academy and for many years its Superintendent, along with other notable graduates. WorldCat records one copy at the American Antiquarian Society.

The frontispiece is a wonderful copper plate engraving titled, "West Point Viewed from the North as it appeared at the Close of the War", by H. Livingston.

The Register of Graduates at the rear of the pamphlet record many of those killed in the Civil War, including the class of June 1861, 22 year old Alonzo Cushing, killed at Gettysburg, July 3, 1863 while commanding Battery A, 4th United States Artillery. Cushing was a posthumous recipient of the Medal of Honor for actions at Cemetery Ridge.

8vo, frontispiece, 106pp. Printed blue paper wrappers, spine chipped and repaired with sticky tape, previous owner signature in pencil at front wrapper; pages bright and clean. OCLC: 839655499 records one copy at the American Antiquarian Society.
