About This Item
"Frank Forester's FIELD SPORTS of the United States, and British Provinces of North America" by Henry William Herbert (whose pen name was Frank Forester). 1849 1st American edition; Stringer & Townsend; New York. Complete set in two volumes. Each volume contains six full-page engravings, and smaller illustrations at the beginning of the chapters. There is an Index at the back of volume II.
The contents of the volumes are as follows: VOLUME I - Introductory Observations; The Game of North America; Upland Shooting; Spring Snipe Shooting; Summer Woodcock Shooting; Upland Plover Shooting; Autumn Cock Shooting; Quail Shooting; Ruffed Grouse Shooting; Grouse Shooting; Autumn Shooting; Rail, and Rail Shooting; Duck Shooting on Inland Waters; Sporting Dogs. Condition:
The set has been nicely and professionally re-bound in modern hardcovers. The original gilt front covers, gilt spines, and back covers have been preserved - each has been affixed to a separate page at the back of the volumes. Clean covers with sharp cover corners. Bright gilt lettering on the spines. Both volumes are tightly bound with no cracks and no loose pages. All covers are firmly attached. The pages of both volumes contain foxing throughout - mostly mild foxing in volume II, though considerably heavier in volume I. The first couple dozen pages in volume I have a thin, light stain strip at the outer edge. Previous owner's bookplate affixed to the front pastedown volume I. The tissue guard over the frontispiece in volume II is not present. Overall the set is in Good condition - it would grade higher if not for the foxing.
