About This Item
Garden City: Doubleday & Company, 1987. Hardcover. Small 4to. Light blue cloth spine with gilt lettering and blue paper over boards, dust jacket. xxi, 1125pp. Illustrations, map endpapers. Very good/very good. Jacket a tad edgeworn and rubbed. Just a tight and nice book club edition of this thick (to cite front jacket panel) "Novel of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War" -- but with superb autograph addition: Tipped to an inner flyleaf is a New York Times envelope addressed to famed Abraham Lincoln Book Shop founder Ralph G. Newman (1912-98) -- who is thanked in this book's acknowledgements -- and contained therein is a fine Autograph Note Signed from Safire, 1p, 5½" X 8½", Washington, DC, 23 March [1983]. On New York Times letterhead, the famed columnist and journalist (1929-2009) pens his friend in bold black fineline: "Dear Ralph / My thanks for / the Lloyd Lewis / book -- I'll / read with care. / Best / Bill."
