About This Item

(Cape Town: Purnell, 1967). Collector's Edition of which this book is No. 46, with a bookplate signed by Clancey to that effect mounted to the front pastedown. 4to; original blue, pebbled full leather; spine with raised bands; gilt-on-red lettering piece to spine's second compartment, gilt lettering also to fourth compartment and tail of spine, and to upper cover; original clear plastic dustwrapper; pp. xviii + 224, incl. index; colour plates after the author's own paintings; line drawings; distribution maps. Earlier owner's name signed on front free endpaper; occasional very light, minor foxing. Very good condition. "Since settling in South Africa, Mr. Clancey has travelled very extensively in his quest for birds, and in recent years has increasingly turned his attention to the elucidation of the rich bird fauna of Mocambique. As a recreation Mr. Clancey paints birds, working in both oils and gouache. His line drawing is highly thought of. He has assisted other ornithologists in the illustration of their works, and did line drawings for Witherby et alia, Handbook of British Birds, 1938-1945. The Gamebirds of South Africa is the author's third major contribution to our understanding of the birds of southern Africa published since 1964." .
