About This Item
London: Longmans, Green, and Co. , 1905. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 9" by 6". Not Stated. A smart first edition of this guide to a year of gardening from popular Victorian author, H. Rider Haggard. First edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece and twenty-four plates, of which are folding. Collated complete. One of the author's lesser known works, this diary of gardening throughout the year provides a thorough explanation of tending to a garden across the year, with a chapter for each month. With insight into planting and harvesting. Written by Sir Henry Rider Haggard, an English writer of adventure fiction romances set in exotic locations and a pioneer of the lost world literary genre. Issue includes publisher's catalogue to the rear dated January 1905, with no impression remarks. First impression catalogue would be dated September 1904 as cited in "A Bibliography of the Works of Sir Henry Rider Haggard 1856-1925" by J. E. Scott. In the original full blue cloth binding. Externally, smart with minor rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Minor fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd spot. Light age toning to the endpapers. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper dated 1905. Very Good
