About This Item
Philadelphia: W. Young, 1788. Good plus.. [4],120pp. Original calf, remnants of gilt leather label. Spine and corners moderately worn. Slightly later ownership inscription on front flyleaf. Light toning and scattered foxing to text. One of the earliest American imprints dealing with the measurement of casks and barrels. The work first explains basic principles of mathematics and geometry essential to the process, and in the following section presents problems and examples specific to determining the volume or size of vessel called for in a given situation. The final, lengthiest section prints an extensive selection of tables to assist in the exercise. The author, Benjamin Workman, was an Irish mathematician who immigrated to Pennsylvania in the mid 1780s to take up a professorship at the College of Philadelphia. He also published several works on mathematics and accounting, produced an annual almanac, and penned a series of Antifederalist essays against the ratification of the Constitution under the pseudonym "Philadelphiensis." A good copy, in original condition.
