Nice condition antique "Gazetteer of the STATE OF MAINE" by George J. Varney. 1882; B.B. Russell; Boston. Nicely bound in full leather with bold spine labels. Richly illustrated with both in-text and full-page engravings. The book contains descriptive sketches of towns, cities, and counties as well as sections about "Indians," "Maine in the War of the Rebellion," "Lakes and Ponds," "Mountains," "Climate," "Rivers," "Valleys," "Bays, Harbors, Capes and Islands," "Name, Boundaries and Area," "Vegetation," "The Birds of Maine," "Native Quadrupeds," "The Fishes of Maine," "Geology, Minerals, Metals, etc.," "Railroads and Telegraphs," "Civil Divisions and Population," "Government, Finances, and Military Organizations," "Governors of the State of Maine," "Charitable and Reformatory Institutions," "Religion," "Civil History," and "The Swedish Emigration."

Condition:
Clean covers; staining at the bottom edge of the spine. There is a small piece of leather missing at the top edge of the spine. There are a couple areas at the bottom of the back cover where the top layer of leather has peeled. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached and are not shaky. Nice interior - the text pages are clean and appear unread with only some very light foxing to the tissue guard over the frontispiece. "J.R. Sayward" is stamped in ink on the front pastedown and on two front end papers. Tanning along the perimeter of the end papers and pastedowns. Overall the book is in Very Good condition.
