London: John Harris, [s.d., c. 1825] vii, [1], 216, 4pp. With a half-title, an engraved frontispiece and two terminal leaves of publisher's advertisements. Uncut in original publisher's two-tone paper boards, printed paper lettering-piece to spine. Rubbed, chipping to dulled spine, loss to lettering-piece, corners exposed. Contemporary inked ownership inscription to recto of FFEP, scattered spotting. A revised and enlarged edition of Mrs. Barbara Hoflandâs [née Wreaks] (bap. 1770, d. 1844) most popular children's book, the story of an impetuous artist whose erratic behaviour leaves his family in penury. The book was frequently reprinted in England, reaching a fourteenth edition by 1841, and was reprinted at least nine times in America. The Critical Review (Vol. IV, 1816, p.657) called it a 'very excellent performance...The story is throughout interesting and well managed, and a more excellent history for the instruction of the age as well as youth, has seldom fallen under our notice.'
