About This Item

Lewes: The Book Guild, 2004. First Edition. . Hardback. Very Good/Very Good. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 24 × 16.5cm, 132pp. Signed and dedicated by Oliver Eade to the ffep. Edward Eade was part of the remarkable generation of British artists who reached the public gaze during the 1930's. Trained at the Slade School of Art and later at the Royal Academy Schools, Eade was a painter whose sensitive use of colour was grounded in his superb skill at drawing. After the Second World War he turned to sculpture, studying for a time with Henry Moore. Edward Eade's work remains completely unknown because it was never exhibited during his lifetime. The author of this monograph, the artist's son Oliver, puts this down to his father's "very profound lack of self-confidence," a quality which seems not to have affected the range and ambition of Edward Eade's artistic output. The Gentle Artist includes more than 80 mostly colour examples of Eade's work across a great spectrum of mediums. Retrospective exhibitions of his work have recently been held to great acclaim in London and Edinburgh. This volume should go still further in establishing Edward Eade amongst the best artists of his illustrious generation. Condition: This copy is in very good condition.
