Map Description:

This large and large scale color map of Korea c. 1946 was originally folded into its own illustrated cover that boasts "A Super-detailed Map in the Size of 41" x 27" Attractively Colored A Special Map of Asia and Formosa Included." In fact, in addition to the color map of Korea and its southern island Saishu, of which there is an inset map, the reverse is covered with black and white maps, with country borders in red. The largest of these black and white maps [16 5/8" x 22 3/4"] is titled "Formosa" and provides a finely detailed map of Formosa c. 1946. The second map is titled "Across the Arctic From U.S.A. to U.S.S.R."[12 6/16" x 8 3/4"] and may imply a strategic military aspect of this map. The third map is of "Asia" with an inset map "Korea" [26 1/2" x 17"].

The map of Korea has a key, explaining that distances are in miles, heights in feet, mountains are shown with hachures. Transportation routes are indicated as first, second and 3rd class roads and as railroads. Korea is colored in a salmon pink, contrasting with nearby Manchuria, shown in green. The ocean around Korea is labeled and includes the Sea of Japan, the Yellow Sea and Korea Bay.The c.1946 map of the Arctic Circle may be a benchmark for current comparisons of melting sea ice around the North Pole and additional strategic, commercial and environmental concerns.

All the maps are by the same author and undated, although the unified version of Korea suggests that the map depicts Korea, Formosa and Asia, as well as Manchuria as of 1946.
