About This Item

New York: Ams Press. Very Good/Very Good. 1987. First Edition. Hard Cover. Lge 8vo 040461583x Dust jacket complete in a clear protective sleeve, couple of small closed tears. Maroon cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership inscription. 531 pges clean and tight. After his death in 1933, George Moore's reputation suffered. For most of his life, however, he was a major figure in the world of English letters, ranked with G.B. Shaw, Rudyard Kipling, Thomas Hardy, and Joseph Conrad. Since Malcolm Brown's influential George Moore: A Reconsideration, scholars have devoted increased attention to Moore's work as novelist, satirist, essayist, and short story writer. This annotated bibliography, more than a decade in preparation, will prove an invaluable source of information for scholars and laymen alike for years to come. It covers British, American, and foreign writings about Moore and his works from the year 1878 through 1987. Each entry includes complete bibliographical data and an abstract of the article, book, or portion of a book devoted to Moore. Moreover, many items contain information included by the editor to clarify important points and to refer readers to other pertinent abstracts. An extremely thorough index facilitates use of this research tool. The bibliography is preceded by Robert Langenfeld's exploration of Moore's career, "George Moore's Reputation: Past and Present." There he delineates the difficult narrative of Moore's artistic development and embellishes our understanding of the diverse reactions to his reputation. .
