About This Item
Paris: Lefevre,, 1822. An attractive set of Tasso's poetic masterpiece, in a pleasing contemporary miniature binding featuring intricately designed lyre tools on the covers and spines. Set during the final months of the First Crusade, the plot follows the adventures of the Christian leader Godfrey of Bouillon, intertwined with the romantic encounters between Christians and pagans. Tasso completed La Gerusalemme liberata in 1575, and the heroic poem was first published in 1580 in Venice. The present edition, edited and with an introduction by the Italian cleric and scholar Antonio Buttura (1770-1832), was first published in 1820. Four volumes, miniature, octavo (96 x 64 mm). Contemporary tan calf, spines with raised bands, lettering and ornaments in gilt to compartments, elaborate gilt and blind rolls to covers enclosing blind stamped lyre centrepieces, gilt decoration to board edges, marbled endpapers and edges, brown silk book markers. Engraved portrait frontispiece in vol. 1. Spines uniformly darkened, minor superficial splits at head of joints, front joint of vol. III a little tender, but firm, some marks and scuffs to covers, very sporadic light foxing to contents, otherwise internally clean. A very good set, presenting attractively in the binding.
