About this book

Ghostwritten, David Mitchell's acclaimed first novel, interweaves nine independent plots from characters in locations around the world - all seemingly connected by chance events. Winner of the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize - issued for the best work of fiction in the commonwealth by an author under 35 - many of the themes persist through much of Mitchell's subsequent work.

First edition identification

Ghostwritten was originally published in London by Sceptre in 1999 in stiff card wraps (there was no hardcover) featuring a lone man standing on a promontory facing another with a lone tree. The first American edition was published by Random House in 1999 with a number line beginning with "2", as is customary for Random House first editions.
