London: J.R. Smith, 1849. First edition, this copy with presentation in ink at the ffep: "R. Higginson, Esq / With the author's / kind regards." Octavo (8.25" x 5"), xiv, [1, "Addenda et Corrigenda"] & 151 pages plus 12 pages of publisher's advertisements. With frontis map depicting "Part of Teesdale in Durham. Showing the District to which the Teesdale Glossary refers." Publisher's light brown cloth lettered in gilt & decorated in blind.
Binding soiled, spine cocked, small splits at the joints, corners bruised, minor foxing, otherwise about good & still quite useful.
The author notes in his preface that he has "introduced into this work some descriptions of local custums, sports, and pastimes, which may tend to rescue from oblivion these fast-perishing relics of a bygone period."
