About This Item
London: Hutchinson, 1982. First edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. 9" by 5.5". None. A lovely first edition copy of this fascinating historical novel by Len Deighton, best known as one of the top three spy novelists of his generation. This work is set in Britain in early 1944 and is noted by critics to successfully evoke the attitudes of wartime Britain. Focusing on the 220th Fighter Group of the US Eighth Air Force in the lead up to the Allied invasion of Europe, the storyline of the novel revolves around a love affair between pilot Captain James Farebrother, and the English Victoria Cooper. The novel's title comes from the second plot line i the work, in which Lieutenant Mickey Morse races to be the first American pilot to break Eddie Rickenbacker's record of 26 kills from World War I. Complete with original unclipped dustwrapper, designed by David Pelham, the renowned Art Director of Penguin from 1968 to 1979. The dustwrapper also feature an illustration by the notable British illustrator Chris Moore, who is best known for his book cover designs for science fiction works. In the publisher's original cloth binding with original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, lovely, slightly faded to head of spine. Spot to front board. Very slight offsetting to endpapers.
