About This Item

Stanley Paul, 1984. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 5.5" X 8.75. H/B 180 pages, condition - Very good in VG jacket. There is a gift inscription in ink on the flyleaf. Gordon Strachan, the most exciting playmaker Scotland has produced in years, shot to international football fame in the 1982 World Cup as Scotland's star player and was voted by the world's press as the personality of the event. In 1983, he inspired his club Aberdeen to victory in the European Cup Winners' Cup against the legendary Real Madrid in Gothenburg. Brought up in a tough district of Edinburgh, the young Strachan resisted attempts to take him to fashionable clubs like Manchester United. He wanted to mature at home, so he joined Dundee and was captain at nineteen. But his career really blossomed when he moved to Aberdeen in 1977, at the start of a period which was to prove Pittodrie's greatest. Now the 27-year-old midfield player lifts the lid off a career which has been brimful of incident, from great performances to serious injury and physical attack from hostile fans invading the pitch. He draws pen portraits of famous figures in football, not least his explosive manager at Aberdeen, the irrepressible Alec Ferguson, with whom he has been known to have more than one disagreement. Strachan brings to his story the same sparkle he brings to his footwork on the field, highlighting the hilarity as well as the drama in a brilliant and eventful career. Jack Webster is a leading freelance journalist. Born and bred in Aberdeenshire, he has been a fervent supporter of the Pittodrie club since he was a child and is author of The Dons: The History of Aberdeen Football Club'.
