About This Item

Connecticut: Wesleyan University Press, 1966. First edition. Cloth. Fine. 11.5" by 9". Not Stated. A very smart first edition of this illustrated study into the stonecarving of New England, with the original slip case. First edition. Illustrated with a frontispiece, two hundred and fifty-six plates, and eight maps. Collated complete. Exploring the symbolic art of the stonecarver as applied to mortuary monuments. Considered one of the sole artforms developing in Puritan New England while it struggled with its abiding concern for things "not of this world" and the social distrust of ceremonies. Considering the in-depth meaning to aesthetic spiritual expression. Written by Allan I. Ludwig, an American art historian. In the original quarter cloth binding with pictorial paper covered boards. Externally, excellent. Original card slip case is sound with wear to the extremities and light loss. A split to the join of the spine with card coming away. Overall good only. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Fine
