Luhansk, Ukraine, : The Author Unique and RARE example of Soviet prisoner's art from the correctional labor facilities in the Voroshilovgrad region, today known as Luhansk region in the Ukraine ( Eastern Ukraine near the border with western Russia), the area where war is now raging between Ukraine and Russia. No date, mid-1970's, purchased originally from the son of the prisoner. 12" h x 10" w, 64 pp. of thick cardboard with 28 of the pages with artwork and 36 pages blank. The covers of hand-painted brass, done in repousse, the front cover bearing a soldier with his lovely lady before a castle, the rear showing a shield, with orange velvet spine. Working mostly in pen and ink with colored pencils, a few pages with opaque watercolors, the prisoner tells the story of his personal "Odyssey" of his imagination. From an opening page with a self-portrait (?) of a bearded man behind bars with a sailing ship on the ocean in the background to a storm depicting him swept away clinging to a wrecked ship, and then a depiction of four scantily clad female guards with assault weapons, he begins his journey. After the title page he is transformed as a Greek hero leading an army. Along the way there are battles, a cyclops, nude sirens, and a final scene of our hero with his lady. A visually stunning display of a prisoner's imagination under a repressive, totalitarian regime, and given the circumstances of its leaving Ukraine, RARE indeed. Very Good, small tear bottom edge rear hinge. . Album. Very Good. 12" h x 10" W.

Copy #35 of an edition planned to consist of 74 copies. Signed by Bartalos, and by Dikko Faust and Esther K. Smith, principals of the press. The construction contains four accordion-fold booklets, letterpress printed on handmade, Khadi jute paper. Each is bound between aluminum covers, which are die-cut into the profile shapes of a cat, duck, crocodile and man's head. They're attached with nuts and bolts to a circular, revolving disk, hinged to a die-cut figure, in an allusion to multi-headed conceptions of Hindu deities. The whole, when folded, is then inserted into the felt-lined film canister, calculated as an ode to Bollywood. [FORE-EDGE PAINTING]. NORDHOFF, Charles (1878-1947). -- HALL, James Norman (1887-1951). Mutiny on the Bounty. Boston: Little, Brown, and Company, 1932.

8vo. 20th-century blue crushed levant gilt, upper cover with central illustration of a ship in white, red and green morocco on-lay, edges gilt, concealing a FORE-EDGE PAINTING of the H.M.S. Bounty and a ship of mutineers at sea; quarter morocco gilt slipcase.
FIRST EDITION of the first work in the Bounty Trilogy, based on the 1787 mutiny in Tahiti. Throughout history, few voyages are as infamous as that of the bounty. Even before the doomed sailing, the naval exploits of Lieutenant William Bligh and his participation in the third and final voyage of Captain James Cook, were quickly becoming legend. Sailing with such a distinguished officer should have been an honour but this was not the case.

On April 28th, 1789, the HMS Bounty was taken over by disgruntled crew members, led by acting Lieutenant Fletcher Christian. The mutiny came on the heels of… Read More

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons / The Knickerbocker Press, 1927. Half-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Corners a bit rubbed, boards faintly soiled, ink date and owner bookplate of Robert N. Cherry on front flyleaf. 1927 Half-Leather. iv, 325 pp. 8vo. No binder's ticket, but appears to be a contemporary custom rebinding: blue leather spine and corners over blue cloth, gilt titles and rules, top edge gilt, new end sheets. "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.
