About This Item

Hazenmore, Saskatchewan, Canada, 1935. Handwritten Diary or Journal. Good Plus. Black, softcover lined composition book with gilt lettering ("Minute Book"), measuring 10- x 7 ½ in. 60 pages with writing. Wear to edges. Saskatchewan Farmers banded together in attempts to receive fair prices for their wheat, and began exploring other marketing outlets - including the Co-Op system. This is the Minutes book of nine successive annual meetings of the Hazenmore Wheat-Pool, in Hazenmore, Saskatchewan a town roughly 2 ½ hours SW of Saskatchewan's capitol of Regina, having a population of around 70 people. "The weather was extremely cold, and there was only a small attendance, about twelve members being present..." "...The subject of overgrading at this point was discussed. Then the following resolution was passed, that in the opinion of this Committee, the fault of overgrading lies with the Inspection Department..." "...Owing to coop conditions in this district we do not think it advisable to build a second elevator at this point..." "A meeting of the local Wheat Pool Committee was held in the elevator office on above date." (1931) "A meeting of the members of the Sask. Wheat-Pool was held in the Curling Rink on the above date. About 20 members were present." "...Whereas, the farmers of this community have experienced three crop failures in succession, and like farmers of the Northern part of the Province were given ‘five cents' per bushel bonus for their wheat for the 1931 crop, and whereas we, the farmers of the dried-out areas petition the Dominion Gov. for a bonus of One Dollar per seeded acre and were not given any assistance...".
