About This Item

Harper & Brothers Publishers New York, 1861. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/--. 9 3/4 H x 6 3/4 W x 1 3/4 inch. NON SMOKING STORE. My listing includes PHOTO OF ACTUAL BOOK for sale. Book Insides GOOD/ Covers Fair. Please read my detailed description. Boards are brown with pattern, and spine and corners are brown leather. FRONT COVER has edge wear through to the boards except on the leather corners but they are worn also and the bottom edge of the lower leather corner is partly worn through, the patterned boards are in good shape with some scratches and a fair number of small round rub marks. SPINE is leather with the title HARPER’S MAGAZINE in a red box in gilt with the red being a bit alligatored, Vol. 23 in gilt below that and on the three raised parts of the spine there is a faded gilt leaf design, the side edges of the spine are rubbed but not worn through, the spine has scratches and some small vertical cracks, the bottom of the spine is worn with a 1/2 inch tear at the bottom front and back and the leather at the top of the spine feels dry and there is a 7/8 inch tear at the top front exposing the spine end of the tops of the pages. The BACK COVER is about the same condition as the front with a bit more of the paper design rubbed off. Page edges are sunned with the side and bottom edges dark. Inner end papers are white and are age darkened and a bit soiled, back end paper has 4 words written in fountain pen. Inside of book is clean and legible, some pages pages are a bit wavy, some pages open enough to show a few of the binding threads. The front end papers are cracked along the spine and the tops of the binding threads are visible but it is solid and the book is solidly together. The title page is torn far enough down that the word Harper’s is missing. The first page of Contents has a 1 inch tear at the top. Page viii has some light chipping on the side edge. The book has been over-opened at page 2 and that page got wrinkled when the book was closed, catching that page not flat. The book appears intact (I didn’t look at each and every page) from there all the way back to Page 848 where seven pages have been cut out up to Page 863/864 (a lovely period illustration of clothing) and the back end papers. The back end paper is open for 1 1/2 inches at the bottom and some of the leather spine can be seen through the gap. No. CXXXIII, Volume 23. Black/white illustrations and maps throughout. Very small print font.

WILLOWBAY BOOKS

THERE IS NO COVID-19 IN MY STORE AND MY SALES ARE ONLINE ONLY. IMPORTANT NOTE RE POSTAGE: I love books and most of my books are NEW or LIKE NEW. I'm very careful in describing my books accurately and I've done so to the best of my ability using the IOBA Book Condition guidelines. All items are from a smoke-free, clean, dry environment. My books are from a large private collection, very well taken care of and rarely handled. All descriptions and photos are of the actual books I'm selling. I'm happy to answer any questions regarding my books, just ask. IMPORTANT RE POSTAGE: I'm in Canada so books to the USA/Other Countries are International shipments and may be delayed by CUSTOMS and/or HOMELAND SECURITY. I'm using the Biblio standard postage matrix, which gives average postage fees, therefore sometimes for an OVERSIZE or LARGE heavy book or expensive book, the postage may be too low and may require extra charges. If I know this in advance, I will notify the buyer before the order is processed.

This is not a huge book warehouse, it is a small one-owner store run by a true book lover. POSSIBLE DELAYS: I'm elderly and disabled and while this usually does not cause a delay in order processing, it sometimes may cause a small delay for me to get to the post office. Thanks for your understanding. I will always email you with the date your package was shipped, and shipping method used.

I'm sure you'll enjoy looking through my books, and purchasing from WILLOWBAY BOOKS. Thanks. Ms. Bronwen Kathy Williams, Ontario, Canada.
